I Must Teach This To Mr Monk

I Must Teach This To Mr Monk

June 28, 20252 min read

Some time ago, I learnt a simply magical technique to help with those unwanted thoughts in our head.

I taught it to many clients who found it very useful for clearing away worry and those persistent, intrusive thoughts.

For some reason, I forgot all about it until this week, when a client told me how she used the same technique to stop an obsessive compulsion, dead.

She told me that one of her worst obsessive behaviours was always to touch a part of the dashboard every time she got out of the car.

She couldn’t leave the car unless she touched that part of the dashboard.

However, as we have been working on her OCD and anxiety, she did something different this time.

As she started to get out of the car, she felt that compulsion rise up, and instead, she shouted out loud,

“LET IT GO!”

She even brought up that song in her head, “Let it go, let it go!” at full volume as she stepped out of the car.

The Original Let It Go Technique.

I am not 100% sure, but I think I learnt this from the wonderful Lori Hammond.

The idea is that when you detect an unwanted thought, imagine you are holding a balloon in front of you.

Put that unwanted thought into that balloon and let go, letting it rise up into the sky, getting smaller and smaller, until it’s gone.

To give it even more power, shout “Let It Go!”

If you want to, play the song Let It Go in your head. (Unless you are a parent like me who is sick of that song!)

Please remember, when you imagine your balloon, make sure it is a biodegradable one.

Although this is an incredibly simple technique, it is very powerful and it's helped many of our clients in the clinic.

Let me know how you get on with it,
