The No. 1 Mistake People Make When Treating Anxiety And How To Avoid It.

Over the last 10 years, we have seen thousands of clients making the same mistakes in their journey to resolve their anxiety problems.

Most try traditional CBT or Counselling that spends endless hours analysing the past and asking why we have anxiety issues
Many try this process several times and then tell us it hasn’t helped, with many stating it has made things worse.

As Dr Joe Dispensa states, “What fires together, wires together”.
The latest neuroscience explains that going over the past again and again, while focusing on the problem, physically strengthens those unwanted neural pathways, making our anxiety issues worse.

Traditional therapy focuses on the problem, and we see again and again it doesn't work because we create this identity built around our anxiety.
It becomes who we are and who we will be in the future.

The Solution: Focus On What You Want Instead.

Let me tell you about Paul.
Paul had followed the traditional path and started with NHS CBT and counselling, which he felt was useful in that he got to speak about his issues, but he felt he didn’t learn any coping strategies to deal with his anxiety disorder when it became a problem.

Over time, he completed 3 rounds with the NHS, only to then be told he would need to go private.

Over 6 years, Paul tried several private CBT & counselling therapists while his anxiety symptoms continued to increase, including a stiff neck and shoulders, chest pains and the feeling that he needed to urinate every 10 minutes when he was anxious.

After a recommendation from a work friend, Paul gave us a call and booked his anxiety assessment call. (The link is below.)

During the call, we explained exactly what anxiety is and the steps we would follow to rewire that neural circuitry, develop a new mindset and identity.

This Bit Is Important!

During Paul’s first session, I asked Paul what he wanted instead of his anxiety.
Just like every new client, he replied,
“to not have anxiety, to be normal, to be free from this anxiety”
I asked him again, and he gave me the same answers.

I explained to Paul, we need a goal to work towards and that he needed to think about what his anxiety-free life would look like, including how he would be at work, around his family, and what he would be feeling.

Very quickly, Paul decided he wanted to be relaxed, happy, productive, and focused while taking care of his family.

We got to work and in 4 short sessions, Paul learnt how to recognise his anxiety earlier, how to slow it down, and then stop it, then moving into his new mental states of being relaxed, happy, productive and focused.

Paul told me his anxiety quickly reduced as we worked through the sessions, and shortly after the last session, he experienced his first anxiety-free day at work.
Paul kept on with his practice and then experienced a whole week.
Around week 7, Paul called me for his follow-up and explained that the anxiety had gone, and his wife was delighted.

During that call, Paul said this to me,
“Mark, unlike all of the other therapists I have worked with, you focused 95% of our time together on how to feel good.
You have given me a toolbox of techniques and made sure I could use them.
You have shown me how to get out of my old anxiety and feel the way I want to feel.
Most importantly, you helped me to see how I should be feeling, rather than focus on my old anxiety”.

I am pleased to say that Paul is still anxiety-free, has been promoted at work and is living very happily with his wife and family.

The Steps To Avoid This Big Anxoety Mistake.

Step 1. Decide On What You Want To Feel Instead of Anxiety.
It is so easy with anxiety issues to focus on what we don’t want, and neuroscience tells us, whatever we focus on, we get more of as it physically strengthens those neural pathways

Take the time to decide on how you would rather feel.
Use words such as happy, relaxed, calm, in control, etc.

Step 2. Learn The Powerful Tools.
In the clinic, we use powerful neuroscience, NLP and Hypnosis tools that help us notice anxiety patterns sooner, to then slow them down and stop them, and then move into a positive mental state to be relaxed and in control.
Some of these can be found in the free anxiety relief pack at the link below.

Step 3. Get Into A Daily Practice Routine.
By dedicating time to yourself and practising daily, neuroscience tells us that those anxiety neural pathways will degrade and disappear over time.
By using the tools to move into a positive mental state, a new set of neural pathways is generated, and with practice, we will feel happy and relaxed, as a default.

The Secret I Want To Share With You.
We all have the power to change when we take some time and practice a positive routine.
I have seen thousands of people transform their lives when they focus on the solution rather than the problem.

I know it can be difficult with anxiety, as I suffered with it for many years.
I see so many people making the big mistake of focusing on the problem, and this holds them back.

For those who focus on the solution, they can use neural plasticity, the ability to rewire our brains to feel as they should.
