If you are struggling with anxiety and thinking about asking the NHS for help, one of the first things you want to know is how long you will have to wait. It is a fair question, because when anxiety is affecting your sleep, your work or your relationships, every week counts.
Here is what the official standards say, what the latest published figures show, and what you can do in the meantime. Waiting times change month to month and vary a lot between areas, so treat this as a guide and check your local service for current information.
Avoid the waiting lists with award-winning private anxiety therapy in Newcastle.
The main NHS route for anxiety in England is NHS Talking Therapies (formerly known as IAPT). You can usually refer yourself directly, without seeing your GP first. NHS England sets two waiting time standards for these services:
75% of people should start treatment within 6 weeks of referral
95% of people should start treatment within 18 weeks of referral
According to a summary of NHS England's published statistics for July 2026, England as a whole is currently meeting both national standards, and the median service starts treatment within about 19 days of referral. That is better than many people expect.
But national averages hide big differences. Some services see people quickly while others have much longer waits, and the figures are averages across everyone who started treatment. The picture depends on where you live and which service you are referred to, so it is worth looking up your local NHS Talking Therapies service directly.
The type of treatment. The standard measures the time to a first treatment appointment. That may be a lower-intensity option such as guided self-help or a group, and the wait for a higher-intensity therapy such as one-to-one CBT can be longer.
Assessment first. There is usually an initial assessment before treatment starts, and this stage is not the same as starting therapy.
More complex or severe cases. If you are referred on to specialist community mental health services, waits can be considerably longer than for Talking Therapies.
Local variation. Some areas are meeting the standards comfortably and others are struggling.
For many people, NHS Talking Therapies is valuable, and there is no reason not to use it if it suits you. Speed of access is only part of the story, though. The number of sessions is often limited, and the approach is usually CBT-based. Some people find that it helps and others find it does not go deep enough or fast enough. We look at this in what actually happens in an NHS CBT session for anxiety and why the NHS keeps failing some people with anxiety disorders.
Refer yourself early. Joining the queue costs nothing, even if you are also exploring other options.
Speak to your GP if your symptoms are severe, getting worse or affecting your physical health. If you are ever in crisis or feel unsafe, seek urgent help straight away through your GP, NHS 111 or 999.

Look at private options if you would rather not wait, or if you have tried NHS therapy before and it did not help. See how long anxiety treatment takes: NHS vs private.
Private therapy is not for everyone, and it is not a criticism of the NHS to say some people choose it. Common reasons include wanting to start within days rather than weeks, wanting a specialist approach, needing flexible appointment times around work, or having already tried and stopped NHS treatment.
